The painting cycle

As is now well known, the paint is fully part of the “special processes” because of the many variables that can affect the reliability of the result, and hence the achievement of the requirements of the specifications or specifications.

The painting cycle, which are described in the summary document in chronological order all the stages necessary to the achievement of the requirements, starting from the mode of preparation of the support the application of the paint product, developed for the realization of artefacts must be subjected to qualification.

The latter is normally done in compliance with the specific requirements provided by the client, or otherwise, if not present, through prescriptions written by the Supplier and submitted to the Principal.

The qualification is done through the implementation of specific tests, usually carried out at a laboratory accredited third party, in order to ensure proper compliance of conduct, including the repeatability and reproducibility of the same.

This will attest that the paint used in those particular conditions and parameters with which it was trained, will always return a reliable result.

Below are a series of tests be used for the qualification process and regulations to which they refer (UNI, ISO, ASTM, the “QUALICOAT”).

Each trial will evaluate each stage of the painting process by highlighting discrepancies and deviations from the requirements.

Evidence relating to the support / treatment:

Adhesion (cross-cut):

UNI EN ISO 2409, “Paints and varnishes – Cross-cut test.”

Adhesion (Pull-Off Test):

UNI EN ISO 4624, “Paints and varnishes – Measurement of the tensile test by.”

Tests for the coating product (strength):

Elasticity (resistance to bending) (Bend Test – Cylindrical mandrel):

UNI EN ISO 1519, “Paints and varnishes – Bending test (cylindrical mandrel).”

Hardness (Bochholz) (Buchholz Intentation Test):

UNI EN ISO 2815, “Paints and varnishes – Determination of hardness by the method of penetration Buchholz.”

Drawing static (Erichesen) (Cupping Test):

UNI EN ISO 1520, “Paints and varnishes – Cupping test.”

Resistance to impact (Impact Test):

UNI EN ISO 6272-1 “Paints and varnishes – Testing of rapid deformation (impact resistance) – Part 1: Test of a falling weight interesting a wide area.”

UNI EN ISO 6272-2 “Paints and varnishes – Testing of rapid deformation (impact resistance) – Part 2: Test of a falling weight to punch small size.”

Resistance to boiling water (pressure cooker)

Directive QUALICOAT

UNI EN ISO 4628-2 “Paints and varnishes – Evaluation of degradation of coatings – Designation of quantity and size of defects, and of intensity of uniform changes in appearance – Part 2: Assessment of degree of blistering.”

Scratch resistance (Pencil Hardness Test):

ASTM D 3363 “Standard Test Method for Film Hardness by Pencil Test.”

Abrasion resistance:

ASTM D 4060 “Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Organic Coatings by the Taber Abraser”

Evidence relating to the film:

Control dry film thickness (Movie Tickness):

UNI EN ISO 2808, “Paints and varnishes – Determination of film thickness.”

Color:

UNI 8941 “colored surface. Colorimetry. Principles. ”

ISO 7724/3 “Paints and varnishes – Colorimetry – Part 3: Calculation of color differences.”

Gloss (Gloss):

UNI EN ISO 2813, “Paints and varnishes – Determination of specular gloss of non-metallic paint films at 20 °, 60 ° and 85 °”

Tests for the coating product (aging):

Salt spray (Acetic):

Directive QUALICOAT

UNI EN ISO 9227 “Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres – Salt spray tests”

UNI EN ISO 4628-2 “Paints and varnishes – Evaluation of degradation of coatings – Designation of quantity and size of defects, and of intensity of uniform changes in appearance – Part 2: Assessment of degree of blistering.”

Wet room static

Directive QUALICOAT

UNI EN ISO 6270-1 “Paints and varnishes – Determination of resistance to humidity – condensation continues.”

UNI EN ISO 4628-2 “Paints and varnishes – Evaluation of degradation of coatings – Designation of quantity and size of defects, and of intensity of uniform changes in appearance – Part 2: Assessment of degree of blistering.”

Accelerated test Kesternich:

Directive QUALICOAT

UNI EN ISO 3231, “Paints and varnishes – Determination of resistance to humidity – condensation continues.”

UNI EN ISO 4628-2 “Paints and varnishes – Evaluation of degradation of coatings – Designation of quantity and size of defects, and of intensity of uniform changes in appearance – Part 2: Assessment of degree of blistering.”

Artificial accelerated aging:

Directive QUALICOAT “Technical Guidelines of the eco” QUALICOAT “aluminum painted (with liquid or powder) used in architecture.”

UNI EN ISO 11341 “Paints and varnishes – Artificial aging and exposure to artificial radiation – Exposure to filtered radiation of a xenon arc.”

Based on the results obtained, it will be possible to obtain the status of the process.

All test data must be managed, recorded and stored as required by the UNI EN ISO 9000.

The qualification of operators will be in accordance with internal procedures to their SQ, and approved by the Client as a result of specific chapters or regulations specified by the latter.

Upon completion of the qualification of the coating cycle is also necessary to provide

qualifications of the operators involved in the process, to ensure that they are capable and enabled.
